This 10 hour/PDPs professional development course unpacks the process of orthographic mapping and provides educators with practical instructional strategies to build automatic word recognition skills among developing and struggling readers. The course features the research compiled and conducted by Dr. David Kilpatrick in his book Equipped for Reading Success. At the conclusion of the course participants will be able to:
- Describe orthographic mapping and the role it plays in reading achievement.
- Convey the component skills that contribute to orthographic mapping, like phonemic awareness and phonemic proficiency.
- Use a validated assessment tool called the Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST) to measure students’ phonemic proficiency and plan instruction.
- Deliver instructional routines that support the development of phonemic proficiency skills, and efficient mapping techniques for phonetically regular and irregular words.
The course is delivered through 7 live and asynchronous modules that provide content through narrated powerpoints, instructional demonstrations, and supplemental readings.
The two live sessions (4 hours via Zoom) will occur in the middle of the course to practice administration of the PAST, and at the conclusion of the course to practice and discuss instructional strategies.

Asynchronous instruction (6 hours via Teachable) is organized into five modules that can be completed on your own schedule. Participants have access to the course three months from the time they enroll. They must complete all content in that time to receive PDPs.
Module 1: What is Orthographic Mapping and Why is Phonemic Awareness Involved? (30 minutes): The first module unpacks the idea of orthographic mapping how it is developed and the important role of phonemic awareness.
Module 2: How to Administer the Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST) (2.5 hour): The second module will provide instructions on PAST administration and offer practice opportunities to participants.
Module 3: How to Score the Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST) (30 minutes): The third module reviews the scoring protocol for the PAST.
Module 4 (Live): Cumulative Review and Practice with Administration of the PAST (November 4, LIVE 1-3pm EST) This live session will review content covered thus far, answer questions, and offer participants an opportunity to practice with administration protocol.
Module 5: Interpretation and Instructional Practice (1 hour): In the fifth module participants will have the opportunity to learn more about interpretation protocol and implications for instruction. In particular, strategy demonstrations will illustrate how to make students through the stages of phonemic skill-building.
Module 6: Additional Strategies to Support Orthographic Mapping (1.5 hour): The sixth module addresses instructional strategies that support orthographic mapping through an emphasis on word study.
Module 7 (Live): Application to Remote Instruction (November 18, LIVE 1-3pm EST): The final module is live, and offers an opportunity to practice with instructional strategies and the modifications necessary for remote instruction.
